History of The Department
The Department started as African Languages and Literatures in 1990 from the defunct Department of Linguistics of Lagos State University. In 1997, the Department established a Diploma course in Yoruba and Communication Arts which later led to the establishment of Bachelor of Arts degree in Yoruba and Communication Arts. With the incorporation of the Communication Arts into the Yoruba programme, the name of the Department metamorphosed into African Languages, Literatures and Communication Arts. At present, the Department is kick starting her Linguistics programme hence the new name; Department of Linguistics, African Languages and Communication Arts.
The department currently runs the following programmes; B.A Yoruba and Communication Arts, B.A Linguistics, M.A Yoruba Language, M.A Yoruba Literature and Culture, PhD Yoruba Language and PhD Yoruba Literature and Culture.
